Plastic Surgery

Beauty and ladies are synonymous from the dark ages. Back then, women are not out in the lime lights, but as we evolve into the age of social media, women are no longer kept out of public view and appearance has become the first law of attraction. What comes next is the question about what is considered attractive.

“Plastic surgery comes from the Greek root word Plastikos which means to mold or shape into form. During the war, surgeons use their knowledge to mend incapacitated soldiers. So back then, plastic surgery meant the process of reconstructing injured limbs back to normal. This included surgery on children who were born with abnormal developments such as a tumor, cleft lip or cleft palate as well as burn victims. Surgeons need to reform them back to as close to normal as possible so that they can continue to live their lives. That was the beginning of modern day plastic surgery.”

With advances in medical technology, plastic surgery moved from repair and reconstruct to beauty treatment.  Now, everyone thinks of a nose job or a nip/tuck at the mention of the word plastic surgery.  For surgeons, the distinction is made as reconstructive plastic surgery, which means repairing defects due to congenital conditions, accidents or cancer, and cosmetic plastic surgery, which is surgery to enhance beauty.

Reconstructive plastic surgery, of course, applies to only the part of the body that is deformed.  Cosmetic plastic surgery can be performed on the entire body.  The most popular procedures include rhinoplasty (nose surgery), blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery), breast augmentation, face lift and liposuctions.

If we divide popularity in Thailand by age group, we find that younger crowds are considering nose jobs, while 30 something group prefer breast enhancements.  As we climb up into the 40s, eye lifts seem more attractive.  By the time the 50s roll around, everything needs a lift, from face lift to breast lift and tummy lift!

Silicone is still the preferred choice for a rhinoplasty and breast augmentation because it is quite safe and can stay inside the body cavity without any immune reaction.  The body can build a natural layer to encapsulate the silicone to make it flexible with the surrounding tissue.  And silicone can also be removed readily, if needed.

Risks of Plastic Surgery

Patients should be healthy and must disclose their medical history such as drug allergy, medical conditions or risky behaviors, such as alcohol consumption or smoking.  This also includes current medications or herbal consumption that may interfere with surgery.

Surgery type is also a contributing risk factor.  For example, a smoker who wants a face lift may have a risk of reduced blood flow to the skin, thereby causing incomplete healing.

Expertise of the surgeon contributes to the outcome of the surgery, risk of complications, as well as corrective actions.  Surgical tools and equipments should be clean and comply with medical treatment standards.  Some countries have clear rules dictating which type of doctor can be called “cosmetic plastic surgeon” and which type of medical facility can offer the procedure.  Thailand is quite lax on the subject.
